Reyes to Miami
Jose Reyes is taking his talents to South Beach after reaching an agreement with the Miami Marlins. The deal, reported by Buster Olney, is said to be set at six years $106 million.
After much deliberation and different teams interested in Reyes, the Marlins and Reyes were able to come to an agreement. The Marlins raised their original deal which was five years for $90 million.
Reyes, 28, spent his first nine years with the New York Mets. His break out season and first full season was in 2005 where he played 161 games and swiped 60 bases.
As a prolific speedster known for creating havoc on the base pads, Jose Reyes could greatly impact the young Marlin offense. He will join players like Gaby Sanchez, who has had two strong seasons to start his career, Mike Stanton and Hanley Ramirez.
Reyes will become the Marlin' shortstop and Hanley will be the third basemen. Hanley, who has been characterized as a very taleneted player lacking leadership and passion for the game, was not too happy hearing he will be moving to third. It should not take a long time for Ramirez to notice the difference Reyes will make in the lineup, and Reyes' defense is not too bad either.
So far, the Marlins have a signed new manager, Ozzie Guillen, a new closer, Heath Bell and now they have a shortopstop in Jose Reyes.
It is now said that the Marlins will eye pitching. C.J Wilson is in their sights as well as Mark Buerhle. Adding a veteran pitcher could help the young starters.
These moves will attract fans to the stands in the Marlins' new home. Reyes has always been an electrifying player. Expect many "Jose" chants this upcoming season, but this time they will come from fans wearing Miami Marlins gear.
