A bank can be a very complex, convoluted, and multifaceted organization. However, here is a simple haiku about banks that explains what they are and essentially what they do:

Financial organizations licensed by government,
provide financial services to customers and investors
in financial markets.

Though this haiku describes what a bank is and does in a nutshell, it does not even begin to tap into the complexities and Machiavellian Pacts that routinely go on within these organizations.

There are two types of people in the world when it comes to interest: Those who earns it and those who pays it. Banks are definitely "those who earns it." And we, the people, are usually those who "pays it" to them.

The level of government regulation in banking depends on where the bank is located. For example, in some countries such as Iceland, the regulation on banks is very, very light. In other countries such as China, there is a wide variety of regulations and enforcements by which banks must abide.
