David Beckham might be the most recognizable active athlete in the world, even if he's not the greatest. His recognition extends beyond his years playing football for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Team England. He made waves around the world by switching, if you will, from football to soccer when he inked a $250 million contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy. An international superstar playing the world's most popular sport in the one country most notorious for not caring about it? That'll draw some attention.

So will marrying Victoria Beckham (née Adams), known colloquially as Posh Spice of the Spice Girls. The Beckhams, "Posh and Becks" as their sometimes known, have raked in the reality shows and endorsements, from adidas to Pepsi and even Beckham's own line of fragrance.

Beckham's made some waves on the 'Net, for example, when he tipped $900 on a $100 bar tab, when he suited up in an (American) football uniform, and when he admitted he was OK with being a gay icon. But so far, none of the stories have involved David Beckham lifting the popularity of American soccer to new heights.
