The ipad3 is the third tablet computer to be released in Apple's iPad series. Following much media speculation, the company finally confirmed that a launch event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on March 7th, 2012. The invitation letter sent by Apple to industry journalists mentioned that the event will showcase "something you really have to see. And touch."

Although Apple has been quite secretive with regards to the new features of the iPad 3, industry specialists expect a series of noteworthy upgrades, including a new ARM-based dual core processor that is manufactured by Samsung, but also an impressive 8 mega-pixel camera. The iPad 3 will likely come with Apple's Retina Display, named as such because it takes into account the limit at which the human eye can perceive pixels. This ensures that colors seem bright and realistic and that every activity, including browsing or playing, will appear much clearer. The technology is particularly useful for small screens that are held at a relatively short distance from the eye (10 to 12 inches).

iPad fans had expected this powerful display to be included in the iPad 2, but industry rumors now suggest that Apple will grant them this wish with their latest device. The iPad 3 will have a resolution of 2048-by-1536 pixels, which is 2 times greater than that of its predecessor, the iPad 2. The display panels are believed to be produced by the Japanese company Sharp, who, coincidentally, has also been working on developing better LCD screens. Apple seems to have invested heavily in the company, which points to a likely long-term partnership between the two corporations.

Ever since the launch of the first iPad, Apple has dominated the tablet PC industry, grossing in over 9 billion dollars in revenues during the final quarter of 2011. It is estimated that the company sold roughly 50 million iPad units and holds an 80% market share in the United States.
