IT is an acronym for Information Technology, which broadly refers to the use of computers and software to manage information. However, the term could also be applied to an entire industry that incorporates the research and development of tools that facilitate this kind of information management.

The main areas of IT include the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of information by a combination of computing and telecommunications. Among the modern, emergent fields of IT, we count various web technologies, bioinformatics, large-scale knowledge bases, cloud computing, global information systems and many more. Consequently, IT is linked to the growth of computer science. Because of this, people generally associate the IT domain with programming languages, hardware, software and information systems.

Bloggers across the web are discussing IT in many facets. Melbourne IT, as an example, has an online business guide, discusses email marketing, blogging and more.


IT professionals can perform a wide variety of functions in an organization and are virtually indispensable to any large-scale business. Companies that do not have their own IT department will usually need to outsource the tasks that require technical expertise. The tasks of IT specialists may range from the simple installation of applications and management of small computer networks, to software development and database design.

Over recent years, IT has started to move beyond traditional computer technologies and networks, and toward the integration of other technologies, including televisions, automobiles, cell phones, navigation, robotics and virtual intelligence. This technological boom has lead to an increasing demand for highly specialized IT professionals and researchers who can rapidly bring about progress in their field. As a result, the non-governmental organization Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and the learned society Association for Computing Machinery, have convened to form accreditation and curriculum standards for Information Technology, as a stand alone field of study, distinguishable from Computer Science.

A scientific study has shown that the per capita computational capacity of machines has nearly doubled, on average, every 14 months between 1986 and 2007. Moreover, the per capita global telecommunication capacity has doubled every 34 months. These figures point to the remarkable exponential pace of technological development that has shaped the face of the IT domain.

The extended term ICT (Information and Communications Technology) may also be used when one wants to stress on the importance of unified communications, as well as the crucial role of telecommunications in technological development.
