piracy
Piracy originally referred to criminal violence (such as trespassing and robbery) committed at sea, but today the term lends itself to an array of lawless acts, including copyright infringement, airplane hijacking, unregulated radio transmissions (pirate radio) and patent infringement. The term has also been used to refer to raids committed on land by paramilitary forces.
Traditional piracy at sea benefits from a romanticized image in contemporary popular culture, thanks to some picturesque characters such as Captain Hook, Long John Silver, and even the more recent Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates Of The Caribbean film series. Colorful language, a lust for hidden treasures, as well as the love of freedom and the open sea are some of the more common motifs to be encountered in pirate stories.
