PR is an abbreviation, and can mean page rank, public relations, and press release among other things.

Many internet marketers disagree about the importance of PR (page rank) in Google's algorithm as it pertains to ranking websites in the search engine results pages, while at the same time clamoring to get free backlinks from websites that have great PR, hoping that some "link juice" will pass through to their own websites.

The public relations type of PR is important for companies and high profile individuals so they can be represented in the media and in the eyes of the public as having a good image and being a worthy part of the community.


PR campaigns can actually be run in behalf of a celebrity or a particular business to rescue a faltering persona and
turn their prospects around. This type of PR paints the subject in the best possible light and often involves "spin".

A press release is basically a newsworthy item that is recorded in print and is usually written up about an organization or business to give them exposure. It can be used for advertising purposes, and can be of the free or paid types.
