supreme court
The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States of America, and is the apex of the judicial branch in the American government system. Commonly referred to as the High Court or by the acronym SCOTUS, the Supreme Court consists of a chief justice and eight associate justices who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Supreme Court Justices, like all Article III federal judges enjoy lifetime tenure.
The Supreme Court hears cases that have come up through the federal appellate courts and state supreme courts. The court decides which cases to take by granting those cases that it wishes to hear a writ of certiorari or, in some extreme death penalty cases, a writ of habeas corpus.
The Court currently has six male and three female justices. The average age is 65 years, 6 months, and every current justice has an Ivy League background. Upon the retirement of Justice Stevens, the Court is without a Protestant for the first time in its history.
There are actually a few blogs that cover the cases and rulings of the Supreme Court. These include SCOTUS' own blog, the Volokh Conspiracy written by a group of professors, and Justia.com. There are also many more blogs that cover different aspects of constitutional law, or specifically investigate constitutional law itself and not necessarily the High Court.
