uefa champions league
The UEFA Champions League is based in Europe and is a soccer competition involving the champions and runners up from the major countries in European. Every year, teams from smaller nations also get the chance to join their elite cousins through a series of qualifying matches played over two legs, at home and then away. There is a detailed explanation here.
The larger nations also have extra places allocated for the third and fourth placed teams of their first division national leagues. They must play a qualifier for the group phase too, but whereas some smaller teams play several qualifying matches, these teams only play one two legged match.
The prize for winning the Champions League is a large silver trophy and a lot of cash. The cash prizes for qualifying for the group phase of the competition run into millions of pounds so they ensure fierce competition and rivalry among the elite of the European clubs.
Clubs like Arsenal and Barcelona are regular qualifiers and usually progress into the latter stages of the competition. There are bloggers writing regularly on this at UEFA Champions League blog giving their personal opinions on the teams, the players and managers and the competition itself.
