viral videos

Viral videos are videos hosted on the Internet that become popular by recommendations and sharing. Viral videos can be hosted on personal websites or large video hosting sites such as YouTube or Dailymotion.

These video hosting sites have accelerated the distribution and popularity of viral videos enormously, as they make it much easier to share contents with other Internet users. Most viral videos were hosted on personal websites in the beginning days of the Internet which has changed completely.

A viral video is often humorous, but it can also be an advertisement, promotion, political opinion, educational content or whistleblowing video.

YouTube videos make up the majority of viral videos but other sites such as Break, Collegehumor or Newgrounds are known to produce and host viral videos as well.
