VOD, short for Video On Demand, is a service that allows user to stream a video from a remote server when he asks for it, whether it’s free or charged on pay-per-view basis. VOD is most often provided by cable and telecom companies. It is also frequently a part of in-flight entertainment systems. Online VOD services became very popular in recent years, in 2010 video and music streaming accounted for 45.7% of used internet bandwidth, and the largest online VOD provider Netflix, is responsible for 20.6% of the global traffic.

The first historical VOD service was rolled out in 1994 in Cambridge as a part of interactive TV technology trial. Only 250 homes were connected. Now, VOD services are available to millions of users worldwide. According to industry analysts, by 2012 users will access more than one third of TV content will be through VOD services, and online VOD streaming will use up over half of all total Internet bandwidth.
