Google has been talking speed quite a bit lately, from their comments about how Chrome is driving a speed competition (which they might be losing to Opera's latest version), to the new version of Google Voice, it's speed, speed, speed with these guys.

And the speed they're touting in the latest release of Google Voice for Android (and BlackBerry, by the way), comes in the form of a feature they're calling "direct access numbers." It works like this:

Previous iterations of Google Voice had to hit Google's severs every time it was used to make a call, so that the server could connect you via a Google Voice access number. The latest version acually assigns a unique number to everyone you call, eliminating the need for the app to hit Google's severs before call comletion.

THe new app is available immediately in the Android Market, and BlackBerry users can hit the Google Voice site to grab an update.
