As we hoped it would, People's Daily has weighed in on the rumor that entire villages were abducted by aliens in the Qinling Mountain region of China on October 13.

According to People's Daily, "when reporters went to Xianyang to learn more about the horrible event, they found the claims could not be further from the truth. Those so-called UFOs were just rays of some spotlights that are located at Yintai Square of Xianyang City."

The rumor began when "a netizen named Zhang Lixing changed his Internet signature to 'Strange thing happened at the foot of Qin Ling Mountain.'" Several pass-alongs later, "strange thing" had morphed into UFO sightings, disappearing villages, military intervention and stampeding snakes.

Because People's Daily has a track record of reporting, rather than explaining away, UFO-related news, we consider the Case of the Disappearing Villages closed.
