Refreshed 27" iMac Not User-Friendly for SSD Upgrades
One of the big pitches about Macs, and Apple in general is that they'll do the thinking for you. No, it's not overt, but it's the underlying theme: everything works just fine, you don't need to know what goes on behind the curtain.
So it's not a huge shock that although the newly refreshed 27" iMac can be ordered with a Solid State Drive (SSD), buyers hoping to avoid Apple's $750 SSD up-charge by installing one themselves (you can get them for under $500) are not exactly facing an easy task.
According to Engadget, online retailer OWC tore down a recent model and found that to install an SSD you'll need a special mounting bracket and cables that are only supplied with Apple's SSD.

Of course, if you're able to figure out some way to secure the sucker in the case, it's a cakewalk to install: just get a male-to-two-female SATA splitter and a left-angled SATA plug and you're set to go. Once you partially remove the frigging logic board to gain access to the free port, of course.
The arrogance of a move like this is staggering (you don't get to upgrade the computer you've just bought, sucker) and is a great example of why, after having been an Apple evangelist for over a decade, I turned my back on the Apple lifestyle juggernaut and began building my own PCs a couple of years ago.
