UK Mapping Agency Licences Data for Commercial Location Tracking
A service that tracks people via their mobile phone is the first commercial use of the Ordnance Survey's innovative OS OpenSpace API.
Tracking company Locatorz offers smartphone users pin-point location identification using a combination of GPS and the Ordnance Survey's comprehensive UK map data.
Location tracking technology is not new, but this is the first service to use the innovative OS OpenSpace API from the Ordnance Survey. This allows GPS location data, accurate to within 10 metres, to be matched to up-to-date map data from the UK's official mapping agency.
The service is aimed at businesses who want to monitor staff movements and parents concerned about their children. They believe the system would be of interest to any organization with staff who travel and work alone, such as taxi drivers, social workers and medical personnel.
To protect privacy permission to be tracked must be granted by the holder of the mobile phone. The application on the phone can be turned off.
