Pssst... Dropbox Giving Away 5GB Free Photo-Syncing Space!
I love Dropbox - I have introduced it to a variety of individuals and organizations, as a method of storing and sharing desirable documents. As an iPad user and trainer, it's been essential to having a simple "hard drive in the sky" filled with documents to grab and view on the run.
With a basic, free Dropbox account, you'll enjoy 2GB of space online to store and share anything you like. Refer others using a personalized link, and you'll get 250MB of free space for each person who signs up, up to a whopping 8GB.
I also love freebies, but it's pretty difficult to get people to remember that referral link, so despite dozens of Dropbox sign ups based on my good word, only 6 people have added to my storage tally.
Today, you can make a big storage leap ahead, and get up to an additional 5GB of space to store your favorite videos and photos on, if you're willing to give Dropbox a hand in making their Cloud-based storage syncing service better.
Dropbox employee David E. posted in the company forum a link to an Experimental Build of their desktop app, version 1.3.12. In the post, David states that this is a beta build, offering an additional 500 MB of space at a time for automatically syncing your mobile device's camera photos and videos.
Sounds like they are trying to give Apple's iCloud-based photo syncing service a run for its money. The box, it would seem, has gotten bigger.
If you're a prolific photographer and run out of space, Dropbox version 1.3.12 will keep adding increments of 500MB of space, until you max out at 5GB additional space.
The post has links to Windows, Mac, and Linux versions of the experimental new build, as well as directions to optimize installation.
I downloaded the build, and was immediately informed by Dropbox that I had more space, and a new folder called Camera Uploads was created. Since my iPad was connected to my Mac, Dropbox asked if I wanted to sync my iPad's photos to their cloud. I said yes, and we were off to the races. I'll be setting up my iPhone next.
