In a move that seems to have stemmed from the threat of Apple's iPad device, Amazon.com Inc. has slashed the price of its popular Kindle DX e-reader device by 22%, dropping the price from $489 to only $379.

The Kindle DX is 1.5 inches thick and has a 9.7 inch screen that utilizes e-Ink technology to make reading more comfortable on the eyes than traditional computer displays. Due to Amazon's reach in the market, the Kindle has been one of the most popular e-Reader models released, but has been facing heavy competition of late by competitors such as the Kobo by Borders and the nook but Barnes & Noble.

Several producers of e-readers, such as Barnes and Noble have been competing aggressively since the introduction of the iPad in hopes of staying competitive with the new device.

This latest move by Amazon is part of an electronic book reader price war that has been heating up since Barnes and Noble cut the price of their Nook device by $60 not too long ago.

It remains to be seen whether the e-reader manages to avoid extinction once the iPad (and similar devices), and continues to become more and more popular amongst consumers.
