The popularity of smartphones nowadays is beyond expectations and so mind-boggling to consumers and tech companies alike. But with popularity comes vulnerability with wireless gadgets security issues.

In a news report, Research In Motion (RIM) just announced that Blackberry smartphones running on their Operating Systems (OS) have been awarded the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC).

According to RIM, the FIPS 140-2 certification for Blackberry 7.0 and Blackberry 7.1 shows RIM's continuing commitment to providing industry-leading, secure, mobile computing platforms for their customers.

Additionally, RIM has said that with all the latest Blackberry smartphones and the Playbook tablet certified under the FIPS program, government and security-conscious customers can deploy their entire range of products with confidence.

In today's digital and wireless communication era, safety and security is not an option, but it is a no-brainer requirement to stay safe from "bugs" and from people with malicious intent.

It's no wonder why some VIPs, government officials, and even the President of the United States has been seen using a Blackberry smartphone. Is it just a coincidence? I highly doubt it.
