New York State has decided to expand state-offered IT jobs at the expense of positions currently filled by IT contractors, Computerworld is reporting.

According to the article, Governor David Paterson is backing a plan that would add as many as 500 jobs to the state's payroll, while dropping those positions from those available to outside contractors.

New York estimates that savings to the state would be approximately $25,000 per yer, per position that gets insourced, with annual savings of up to $15 million dollars, assuming every position they hope to eliminate can be filled by a state worker.

The jobs offered by the state, called "term appointments," will pay from $49,000 to $96,000, before a benefit package that adds approximately 48% to the overall pay.

Documents detailing the entire proposal are available on the New York State budget website.
