In this video from Protect Maine Equality, Philip Spooner—an eighty-six-year-old World War II veteran, VFW chaplain, and life-long Republican— defends the right of same-sex couples to marry in a testimony given at a hearing on Maine's marriage equality bill in April. Spooner is a father of four and one of his sons is gay. "My wife and I did not raise four sons with the idea that three of them would have a certain set of rights, but our gay child would be left out," he explains. "This is what we fought for in World War II. That idea that we can be different and still be equal."

This video has been around since April but only recently went viral, getting a huge spike in views over the past couple of days as Maine prepares to vote on marriage equality. This is a truly moving message that should appeal to voters on both sides of the aisle. Marriage equality has been called the greatest civil rights issue of our generation, but this video demonstrates that it's an issue that transcends generational—and political—boundaries.
