Cold Weather Gains Major Momentum at SXSW
The latest film by director Aaron Katz premiered at SXSW with some serious early buzz to a sold-out theatre this weekend. Cold Weather marks a bit of a departure for the filmmaker, whose previous films—Dance Party, USA and Quiet City—were often lumped in with the patronizingly named "mumblecore" scene.
From what I've gathered about the film, Cold Weather takes a similar approach to dissecting personal relationships as Katz's earlier work, but throws in an unexpected twist: it's also a genre film, toying with the conventions of the detective story.
So far, the film seems to be getting a great response. Karina Longworth of the LA Weekly calls it "the first unqualified hit" of the festival and "an impressive experiment in genre." Mark Olsen of the Los Angeles Times writes, "Cold Weather has just enough of a jolt of conventional plotting to make it a more audience-friendly and, dare one say it, commercial picture."
According to indieWIRE blogger Anne Thompson, even Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) was buzzing about the picture. A promising sign for the film's future distribution?
The trailer offers only a teasing glimpse of the film, but it's a fine showcase for Andrew Reed's stunning cinematography and Keegan DeWitt’s percussive score. It looks like these lo-fi mavericks might have a real hit on their hands.
