A Wii Bit of a Confession

Wiianddannybday 001 I have to come clean. I wrote here on this very blog about whether I should or shouldn't get my children a video game system. I had decided against it. I had all kinds of legitimate reasons not to. I thought I was really making the best decision for my children and their well-being by putting off a game system purchase-maybe indefinitely.

Then Christmas came and my sister and her husband picked my name and my husband's name in our family gift draw. They teamed up...and bought us a Wii. All my arguments flew right out the window the minute I strapped that controller to my wrist for the very first time.

First off, I am obsessed with the adorable little virtual fitness trainer because even though she politely tells me I might be just a bit obese, she and her multitude of stretching, strength and balance games allow me, for the first time in my life, to enjoy exercising.

Occasionally we have the finances and the mental ability to organize an outing or two, but often we just watch a lot of television and play with Barbies or Batman. It's sad really. It is especially bad in the winter because we are summer people. We are always up for a walk or a drive to play in the surf during the warm months, but as soon as the temperatures drop, I hibernate and my husband finds sports on any channel he can. We don't ski, or snowboard or even own proper winter coats. We just sit and count the days until spring.
