Mama needs a new pair of shoes

CLSHOE I have been a mother for a long time now. I have mostly gotten over my old life. Of course, I still miss going to the movies, enjoying coffee while it's hot and completing an entire conversation with my husband in one sitting. But overall, I have settled into my mom persona just fine. Except for the shoes.

I am a shoe girl. I know, every woman is a shoe girl on some level, but to me shoes are like comfort food. See, I have great feet. There, I said it. I love my feet. They have always been there for me. In college when I ate and drank way too many carbs and gained (ahem) pounds-my feet stayed long and slim and started at the end of a shapely ankle. I could dress up my feet in hot shoes and put on some kohl eye liner and the boys didn't notice the weight anymore.

As a grown up, no matter how stretchy my skin gets, no matter how many muffins top my jeans the feet stay slim. No matter how grey my hair threatens to become or how many laughs stay put around my eyes-my feet stay cute and young. So I dress them up in heels and boots and shoes that make no sense for a mother of three. It is silly and it is wrong but it makes me feel good so I do it.

Until now. Since I moved into the center of town, I have had to face the reality that I walk...a lot. And the stilettos-no matter how comfortable-just ain't cutting it anymore. In the winter I can get by in boots. They seem sensible and are still pretty fashion forward. Now that spring is here, I can't hide in my boots anymore. I'm left with flip flops which should be reserved for  walks to the beach (because that is about the total distance they are comfortable for) and stacked heels or wedge espadrilles. Even if they aren't terribly painful, the black wedge satin espadrilles that turn heads on date night just don't fit walking down the main street of town pushing a stroller and carrying a first grader's back pack. At best, the heads are turning because I look silly. At worst, they turn because I look like a street walker with small kids instead of a lady with kids walking down the street.
